Personally, I believe that schools are not built for learning. An ideal learning environment, in which what was taught actually sticks in the students' mind, would involve movement, discussion, different scenarios that would stimulate new questions and a desire to learn. It is important for lessons to be interactive and make their minds work instead of simply spitting information out at them. Oftentimes students will zone out and not retain information when they are lectured or not shown why what they are learning is important. I have also found myself questioning why I would need to learn things in my classes, but wanting to learn more on a certain subject.
While it can be more difficult to implement these ideals in a kindergarten class, given that they are required to learn certain things such as the alphabet and numbers, it is still possible to create a stimulating environment in which learning is desired. For instance after a science experiment the teacher and/or I could begin a discussion in which we answer questions that the students have on why what happened, happened. In another situation we could read a story and have the children come up with questions they have for the author based on how he/she wrote the story. Later we could come up with possible answers to these questions. These situations reflect an ideal learning environment because they allow the students to partially dictate their own learning, which requires them to think for themselves.

Learning Activity
To see the blog prompt on Mrs. Kallas's blog click here.
For my learning activity, I will be zoning in on Kindergarten Math adding one more and subtracting one less. To see my board on one more, one less click here. Though this activity my students will be able to identify one more and one less with numbers.
Directions to make the activity:
1) Design cards with one number at the top and multiple answer choices at the bottom including one more than the number and one less than the number (also have one wrong answer choice).
2) Make around 10 sets of cards.
3) Print out and laminate these cards.
4) Take at least 20 clothespins and make a mark with a marker on 10 of them and a different mark with the other 10. For example mark the first 10 with a orange L for less than and the other 10 with a green G for greater than.
5) Assimilate this activity durning math stations.

Find the Treasure in Teaching
To see the blog prompt on Mrs. Kallas's blog click here.
When I picked my competitions, I first chose to do chapter scrapbook because scrapbooking is one of my hobbies. Later Mrs. Kallas suggested that I enter into the job interview. I would not change anything about my choosing my competitions. A few of the obstacles in my competition were because we were in two different class periods, it was difficult to discuss with some of my team members on the scrapbook. I really enjoyed looking at everyone else's competitions. The only thing I would change is I would try to work more on the scrapbook. I've gained wonderful interview skills through this. I am really looking forward to going to state.

My First Day as an Intern
For a link to the prompt on Mrs. Kallas's blog click here.
My first day as an intern was fantastic. I am placed at Walker Creek Elementary in Kindergarten with Mrs. Becraft who just so happens to be my neighbor. This is her fourth year teaching Kindergarten total and her first year with WCE. Click here to go to Mrs. Becraft's webpage on Walker Creek's website. For my first day, I wore my black polo with an apple logo that said I am a student intern. When I first walked into my class, I felt so happy and excited. The kids were watching a video on colors and none of them could stop looking at me. After they finished the video Mrs. Becraft let me tell the kids a little about myself and what I was going to do in their class. Going to my class on my first day made me fell stress free and excited because I finally get to do something I want to do in school. I am looking forward to making a connection and changing the lives of all the kids in my class.
Here's a picture of my mentor teacher, Mrs. Becraft, and her family:

Reading Rocks!
For a link to the prompt on Mrs. Kallas's blog click here.
I choose Hop on Pop written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss. This book would be good for ages Kindergarten through second grade.
A few words that I would key in on are:
Upside down
Bumped
Yelp
Tomorrow
Today
Some higher level reading questions I would ask Kindergarteners are:
Why would Pat not want to sit on the cactus?
Why is it surprising that fish would be in a tree?
Why would Pop not want to be hopped on?
Can you sit on a bat? Why or why not?
As an activity to follow the reading of this book, I would have the students choose two words that rhymed and have them try to make a sentence with their words.
The following is a video of someone reading Hop on Pop in a singsong manner:

What Do Teachers Make?
If my family was to ask me what I would get out of being a teacher, my answer would be similar to the poem by Taylor Mali (click here to read the poem). I can remember from an early age wanting to work at a school because I enjoyed all of my teachers, and I loved being in the classroom. My mom was an art teacher at my elementary school, and I loved helping her after school. I want to be a teacher, so I can make other children's early school experience as amazing as mine was.

Welcome to The Baum Dot Com!
The Baum Dot Com is a blog dedicated to my journey as I take my first step in becoming a teacher. I am a junior at Birdville High School, and I'm currently enrolled in the Instructional Practices in Education and Training at the Birdville Center of Technology and Advanced Learning (BCTAL).
My inspiration to be a teacher comes from my mom, an art teacher, who I've followed as she went through the process of becoming an elementary art teacher. Helping her in the classroom, both during class and behind the scene, made me realize my love for teaching children.
Please follow me as a I go through the steps to becoming a teacher!
